STAIR DOWN AND OUT
STAIR TO FALL CREEK GORGE
ITHACA, NY
ITHACA, NY
To compliment the existing heavy, organic, meandering path from the street down to Fall Creek Gorge, the intervention presents a vertical and light way down the steep drop and out into the gorge. This creates a duality between heavy ground, which is dramatic in its own rite, and an elevated drama up above. The construction is prosthetic in quality–light and translucent wherever possible to maintain maximum contact with the context. Key existing features anchor the stair; a stone wall acts as a backdrop for a bench where the structure comes to meet it, and the path passes below. The result is a space for reflection that pulls you away from the busy street and into the coveted isolation of Ithaca’s majestic gorge.
