Structural Model
Serpentine pavilion, 2007
Olafur Eliasson and Kjetil Thorsen
The 2007 Serpentine Pavilion boasts three stories of self-supporting steel lattice held together by pinned connections, forming a central performance space that is circumnavigated by a spiral ramp on the exterior. In order to model the structural shell, 16 unique plexiglass connections were fabricated to join wooden I-beam components. Lasercut plans of the past Serpentine Pavilions provide site orientation below the stepped seating of the central gathering space. The structural model was a collaborative, 6-week endeavor based on only a simple plan and section from the architect.
A collaboration with Jeremy Bilotti.
