TROPES OF THE POPES
Collage
A flirtatious collage to accompany a research project during a semester in Rome.

The role of the Pope in the 15th and 16th centuries was paradoxical.
The figurehead of the Catholic church was obliged to devote his entire being to serving God, the Church, and its people, thus giving up a fundamental human diversion: sex. However, the popes of the Renaissance and Baroque era were simultaneously entrenched in the intense political arena of Rome and Europe. Their position supported lavish lifestyles if they so chose, at a time when society and even the church was tolerant enough to allow for aairs, illegitimate children, and other exploits. Tropes of the Popes catalogs the sexual scandals of the pontificates over a span of 200 years.
